On April 29, 1775 the New York Provincial Congress adopted a “General Association” to be “transmitted for signing to all the Counties in the Province.” The “General Association” exclaimed New Yorker’s rights as Englishmen, but also their loyalty to the Continental Congress. Over the course of the next few months this document made its way through the various counties in New York and even the Hampshire Grants to be signed by “Freeholders, Freeman, and Inhabitants of the Province of New York.” It made its way to Crown Point and Ticonderoga by June where Benedict Arnold and 32 men of the region signed their allegiance on June 15, 1775. As signed documents made their way back to the various Committees of Safety and Correspondence across the counties of New York it became apparent to New York officials that not everyone was declaring their allegiance by signing the “General Association” and distribution of the document continued through the next year until it was revised on June 20, 1776 after the Continental Congress ordered all men who “were notoriously disaffected the American Cause” to be disarmed. Adopting more severe language, the new General Association took on a new meaning with the Declaration of Independence passed by the Continental Congress on July 2nd 1776. 🔗 To Donate: https://14762a.blackbaudhosting.com/1... 🔗 Become a Member: https://fortticonderoga.org/join-and-... 🔗 To Shop: https://shop.fortticonderoga.org/ 🔗 Facebook Page: / fortticonderoga 🔗 Instagram Page: / fort_ticonderoga
