Giulia Semenzato, soprano Kammerorchester Basel Luigi Rossi's only opera composed in Rome, "Il palazzo incantato" (The Enchanted Palace), aimed to condense the narrative of Orlando Furioso into the adventures of sixteen characters. The production, staged in 1642, featured notable performers such as castrati Loreto Vittori and Marcantonio Pasqualini, portraying Angelica and Bradamante, respectively. The aria "Sol per breve momento" provides insight into more intimate emotions, using chromaticisms to convey Bradamante’s suffering over the absence of her beloved Ruggiero. Translation: For just a short moment Leave me, O sufferings, That I may draw breath In my grievous torment, As I feel myself languish and die. And if die I must, Let my afflictions permit me, At least for a brief instant, To behold him who slays me, and then to die.
