This was the 2nd part of the DVD Documentary on Abronia lizards, which i produced in 2009 - this section was focused entirely on the captive management aspects of keeping these animals. My hope was to be able to teach people that might end up with these animals, so they had a better shot of keeping them alive. It's been nearly 11 years ago that i shot this video and some of my thoughts about keeping the animals have changed. For example, i no longer recommend using bromeliads for Abronia in captivity, They tend to fill up with dead crickets and lizard waste, and become bacterial breeding grounds for pathogens, like coccidia, which can take the animals down quickly. In the wild the bromeliad plants get flushed out by heavy rains, and are exposed to UV light which kills off most bacteria, so that they are not harmful to the animals to use in thermo-regulation or even drinking during dry season. Also, and animal might cruise around in a given habitat and use over 100 plants...where in an enclosure they may be sharing 2-3 plants with 2-3 lizards, using the same 4 square feet everyday. For those reasons, i have stopped using bromeliads in the enclosure. But at least here you should get a good basic review on keeping these animals. Video quality wasn't the best back in 2009. The original intent of this video was to educate, so please feel free to share it with your lizard keeping friends!
