Rogosanti is a sanskrit word meaing "healing." Rogosanti was composed in 1986 my James Wood and is the first of three pieces for percussion that was inspired by Balinese music and tradition. Rogosanti opens with a primitive sounding chant using the syllables "kung" and "tak." These are low and high sounds that introduce the form of the piece being the balance between yin and yang. One of the most interesting things about James Wood's percussion music is there is no sound that goes without some sort of explanation. For the first 6 minutes we will hear very fast highly thought out rhythms played on bongos and congas, the skin instruments, representing sickness, death, and evil spirits attempting to enter the body. About halfway through the piece there is a dramtic intervention by the low Thai gong representing the voice of God. This propels the music into the microtonal glockenspiel and other metallic instruments. James Wood believes in his compositions for these metallic instruments to be sacred. It is clearly heard at the end of Rogosanti as the evil spirits are overcome and the piece ends in goodness. This is a performance by Victor Caccese on May 7th, 2011 at the Peabody Conservatory as part of the Spring 2011 Peabody Percussion Group concert.
