Hedgehog Care at Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital

Each year Brent Lodge cares for 600 hedgehogs, with over 250 admitted in winter. We provide expert advice, life-saving care, rehabilitation facilities, specialist food and vet treatment for hedgehogs who are usually too small or too sick to survive their hibernation. Prolonged summers and milder winters are causing more hedgehogs to produce babies too close to hibernation, resulting in hoglets too small to survive the winter on their own. Without support many of these vulnerable hedgehogs will perish in the upcoming colder temperatures. Caring for hedgehogs is very labour intensive. Each patient needs their bedding changed every day - sometimes twice a day for those very messy hedgehogs! They are weighed each day to ensure they are on their way to reaching a healthy weight for release in the spring.
