SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Rodney Miranda, Secretary of Culture, La Paz Municipality: "The main goal of this event is to reaffirm the value of the skirt-wearing woman. Talking about the chola paceña (from La Paz city) means talking about a cultural icon that represents not only the people of La Paz but all Bolivians. And today, that's what we're aiming for." 3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Rodney Miranda, Secretary of Culture, Municipality of La Paz: "The skirt-wearing woman and her fashion trends are changing more and more. Some outfits are conservative, others are more extroverted. The skirt-wearing woman is increasingly using more transparent fabrics and lower necklines. I think this is part of the cultural evolution, not only in La Paz but across all of Bolivia." 7. Various of cholitas walking the runway 8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Ana Villamont, cholita model: "What we've done is revalue what the chola paceña represents — everything related to her culture, her beauty, and what this iconic figure means for the country, for Bolivia." 9. Fashion show STORYLINE: La Paz celebrated its 477th anniversary on Friday with a fashion festival honoring the style of Bolivia’s Indigenous Andean women, known as the chola paceña. The women, recognized for their colorful skirts, are an emblem of the country’s identity, and the event aimed to highlight and celebrate their traditional attire. More than 100 models walked the runway wearing designs from five prominent Bolivian designers. The Indigenous models showcased vibrant blankets, bowler hats, skirts, and jewelry, moving with the elegance and playful spirit that define this cultural icon of the Andes. After decades of discrimination, Bolivia’s Indigenous women have in recent years embraced their heritage with pride, using events like this to assert their visibility and celebrate their cultural legacy.
