THE SONGBIRD: Erna Spoorenberg (1925 - 2004) was a Dutch soprano of impeccable musicianship and elegant bearing. She became a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1949, under Karl Böhm's leadership. In Vienna she sang mostly the standard lyric-coloratura fare appropriate for her young age (Adele, Gilda, Norina), but she did begin to specialize in Mozart roles (a good stylistic fit for her pure timbre and cool temperament), including singing both Pamina and the Queen of the Night in "The Magic Flute" (though not in the same performance!). She relocated to Amsterdam in 1955 and became one of the leading sopranos at the Dutch National Opera for 15 seasons, with her final performance there as Konstanze in 1970. THE MUSIC: Mozart composed "Lucio Silla" K.132 when he was 16 years old; it premiered in Milan in December 1772 to moderate success. The cast calls for four sopranos (one as a castrato) and two tenors. The opera seria format and plot are typical: Roman dictator Silla lusts for Giunia, who is the daughter of his arch-enemy and who in turn is married to the banished (and presumed dead) Roman senator Cecilio. Mozart composed the role of Giunia for the soprano virtuosa Anna de Amicis (1733 - 1816), who he had met in Mainz in 1763 and who impressed him immeasurably. There are a few references to her in Mozart's letters ("De Amicis sings incomparably") and his father's ("She sings and acts like an angel"). Giunia has four demanding arias of differing emotional colors, one of which is a desparate allegro "Parto, m'affretto" with some very tricky coloratura figures and complex rhythms.
