A massive earthquake with a magnitude of seven point seven struck central Myanmar, according to the United States Geological Survey. The epicenter was located sixteen kilometers northwest of the city of Sagaing at a depth of ten kilometers. The strong tremors were felt hundreds of miles away in Thailand and southwestern China. In Bangkok, buildings were damaged, and in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, roads buckled due to the force of the quake. The buildings in Bangkok are not designed to withstand powerful earthquakes, raising concerns about significant damage. The shockwaves from the earthquake in central Myanmar reached Bangkok, causing widespread panic. In the Thai capital, rescue teams worked to clear debris after the collapse of a large building. It remains unclear whether anyone was injured or trapped under the rubble. The Greater Bangkok area, home to more than seventeen million people, saw many high-rise buildings sway violently. The earthquake struck around one thirty in the afternoon local time, triggering alarms in buildings across the city. Terrified residents evacuated high-rise condominiums and hotels in the densely populated center of Bangkok. People gathered on the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun after the violent tremors. Some metro and light rail services in Bangkok were temporarily suspended for safety checks. The shaking was so intense that water splashed out of rooftop swimming pools in high-rise buildings. The earthquake also impacted telecommunications, disrupting internet access and mobile networks. Updates from Myanmar were difficult to obtain due to the government’s tight control over media and information. State-run radio, television, print, and online media in Myanmar provided limited details about the disaster. The Myanmar government imposed restrictions on internet use, making it challenging for humanitarian organizations to communicate. The BBC reported difficulties in reaching aid agencies operating in the affected regions. Hospitals in Myanmar prepared for a possible influx of injured individuals as aftershocks continued to rattle the region. Myanmar’s emergency services deployed search and rescue teams to assess the damage in Sagaing and surrounding areas. Several Buddhist temples, including some centuries-old structures, suffered severe cracks and partial collapses. People in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, described the earthquake as the strongest they had ever felt. The international community, including neighboring countries, closely monitored the situation and offered assistance. As aftershocks persisted, both Myanmar and Thailand remained on high alert for potential further destruction.
