CHI Lites 2019: Nova Ahmed - Seeking social justice through digital storytelling Nova Ahmed Seeking social justice through digital storytelling ABSTRACT How can citizens use digital storytelling as a way to express themselves in the face of censorship? Nova Ahmed tells us about her experience of participating in a student protest against reckless driving, unruly traffic and insensitive authorities, following an incident in Bangladesh where two school children were run over by a bus. Three days into the demonstration, a social media shut down attempted to suppress the movement. Citizens instead shared photos and videos face-to-face. This enabled them to express anger, frustration, and finally hope, taking a step towards social justice. BIO Nova Ahmed uses technology to develop solutions to problems that are both timely and specific to her home country, Bangladesh. This means designing for a specific culture and working within constraints such as cost. She obtained her PhD at Georgia Institute of Technology (USA).
