This video discusses the horrific events that transpired in the Congo during the late 19th and early 20th centuries under King Leopold II of Belgium. This era coincides with the Scramble for Africa, a period marked by European colonization, particularly formalized at the Berlin Conference (1884-1885). Although Leopold was absent from the conference, his claims over the Congo were recognized, leading to the establishment of the Congo Free State. Leopold's motivations were primarily economic, driven by the exploitation of the Congo's resources, notably ivory and later rubber. The methods employed to extract these resources were marked by extreme brutality and slavery, resulting in the deaths of millions of Congolese people. The regime's inhumane policies included systematic murder of those who resisted rubber collection and the gruesome practice of severing the hands of the deceased as proof of compliance. The atrocities were initially reported by Christian missionaries, which led to some media exposure in Europe and America. Despite Leopold's efforts to suppress this information through bribery, influential figures like William Randolph Hearst ultimately revealed the extent of the violence and exploitation. Reports indicated that from 1885 to 1909, the Congolese population was halved, amounting to approximately 10 million deaths. Leopold's reign ended with his death in 1909, but the consequences of his actions persisted, deeply affecting the Congolese population and their historical narrative. This video also references Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" as one of the first literary works to address these atrocities. In contemporary times, Belgium has begun to confront its colonial legacy, acknowledging the need for dialogue and reparations as movements against colonialism and racism gained traction, particularly highlighted by events in 2020. The struggle to address and rectify this dark chapter in Belgian history continues amidst ongoing discussions among historians, politicians, and the public. https://theleapoffaith.substack.com/
