A world-renowned team performs fetal surgery to remove a tumor on the lining of an unborn baby’s heart. http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu Brailey and Louis were shocked when a routine ultrasound showed their unborn child had a tumor growing on the lining of her heart. Left untreated, this rare condition, called a pericardial teratoma, would be fatal. The family’s local cardiologist in Tennessee recommended they go to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) immediately for care. This video shares the family’s experience undergoing lifesaving open heart fetal surgery at CHOP to remove the tumor from their unborn baby’s chest. The surgical team included lead fetal surgeon, Holly Hedrick, MD; maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Juliana Sanchez Gebb, MD; attending pediatric cardiologist and Director of CHOP’s Fetal Heart Program, Jack Rychik, MD; and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, Katsuhide Maeda, MD, PhD. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia does more fetal surgeries than any hospital in the world and is at the forefront of managing fetal tumors. The first-ever fetal surgery to remove this type of tumor was performed at CHOP in 2016. The CHOP team has now done this surgery four times, the most of any hospital, anywhere. The hospital is also the world leader in fetal surgery for other conditions, including fetal surgery for spina bifida, fetal surgery for sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT), fetal surgery for CCAM/CPAM, and more.
