Brought to you from the depths of Rics garage is this lovely Hoover Convertible from 1980. The Convertible or Dial-a-Matic as it was called in the US, was quite a historic machine being the first clean air upright I believe. It was introduced in the US in 1963 and to the UK a little bit later and remained the flagship upright in Hoovers range for many years. I know that in the UK they lasted until the arrival of the Concept 1 cleaners in 1980. Although for several years after it was sold as an Exclusive through selected stores. As well as the fact it was clean-fan, it was also one of the first uprights to have a built in port for the hose and tools which alleviated the need for a pan converter or for the belt to be removed. Hence the Convertible name because it could be easily 'converted' for above the floor cleaning. You'll also notice the suction regulator control on the back. Hence the 'Dial-a-Matic' name in the us. It's a great performer on carpets combining the brilliant Hoover agitator with powerful clean air suction. It did great on the rice test where some of the dirty fan cleaners tend to struggle a little. This particular Convertible was one that Ric acquired another collector and was originally from germany but it's pretty much identical to the UK versions of the time.
