Between May 2009 and January 2011in the community of Palo Alto, Ca., seven children ages 19 or younger died by suicide in what is known as a suicide cluster, or suicide contagion. Shashank Joshi, MD, of Stanford University, was on the front lines in providing care for this community. Here, he talks about risk factors for suicide that are specific to teens and what parents, school professionals and friends should look for if they are concerned about a young person in their life. Dr. Shashank V. Joshi is the director of training in child and adolescent psychiatry, and assistant professor of psychiatry, pediatrics, and education at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University. He was interviewed at the NYU Langone Child Study Center in April 2011. Learn more about NYU Langone's Child Study Center: http://www.nyulangone.org/locations/c...
