Closure after pregnancy loss - “Products of Conception” (POC) Genetic Testing

CW: pregnancy loss Losing a wanted pregnancy is something no one should ever have to experience. Today I want to share about a genetic test that can give insight into the reason why a miscarriage may have happened. Most early pregnancy losses are caused by random chromosome differences that happen due to normal biological processes. We often reassure patients that there was nothing they did or did not do that caused the loss. In my experience however this usually doesn’t provide much reassurance, and it’s common for people to re-live the early days/weeks of their pregnancy as they search for potential things they did that caused the loss. This is why I wanted to share about a genetic test that can be performed on the fetal tissue that leaves the body after a pregnancy loss to test for chromosome abnormalities. This horribly named test is called “product of conception” (POC) testing. While the results of this testing may bring closure, I recognize that the process of the test itself can also cause further trauma. For the testing to be done the fetal tissue that leaves your body needs to be collected. If you haven’t heard of this test, it’s probably because most healthcare providers don’t consider it “clinically useful” meaning that the results might not change your care or guide further treatment. But I think it’s time we stop gatekeeping. Medical care should be trauma-informed, and shouldn’t just focus on your physical health. This is obviously a sensitive topic. All feelings are welcome here. Some gentle reminders: 🫶🏻 it’s ok to be angry if you weren’t offered this testing 🫶🏻 it’s ok if you were offered this testing but weren’t able to bring yourself to collect the “sample” 🫶🏻 even if the loss wasn’t due to a chromosome abnormality it still wasn’t your fault If you’ve experienced a pregnancy loss I’m holding space for you today.
