Lyrics: ©Zeina Azzam, Music: ©Ep Wesseling This performance was at the Groningen voor Gaza Demonstration by the Projectkoor Groningen voor Gaza, a choir of 600 singers, on the Grote Markt in Groningen, Holland. Note from the poet Zeina Azzam: The genocide in Gaza has defined our time as one of cruelty and unfathomable injustice. Airstrikes have killed entire bloodlines in Gaza — generations of family members — as bombs exploded and buildings collapsed over their heads. Thousands of children are among the victims. Early in this war on Gaza we learned that Palestinian parents wrote names on their children’s arms and legs so they could be identified in death. This was an act of profound anguish, of deep grief and powerlessness. I wrote this poem to try to express the pain of children in war ravaged Gaza, and it’s in the voice of an innocent child. As of this writing, the number of children killed in Gaza has surpassed 18,000, and this figure is likely an undercount. Everyone tells me that they cry when they read this poem. I have to say that I cried as I wrote it. I am honored and most grateful that the talented Ep Wesseling has given my poem new life by composing this song. Note from the composer Ep Wesseling: The killing of so many innocent children in Gaza made me feel hopeless and powerless. What could I do? Then I realized that as a musician I could write music expressing my feelings to make other people aware of what is happening. On the internet I found the poem “Write my name” by Zeina Azzam. The words made me cry. The touching words of Zeina’s poem ‘write my name’ inspired me to compose the music. I wrote Zeina for permission and she agreed. I am proud to present the song “Write my name” and I hope that many many singers will perform it. Every time I sing the song there are tears in my eyes. Thank you Zeina Azzam for letting me compose this song on the words of your poem. Planning a public performance of “Write my name”? Please do! This song has to be sung! I composed 4 versions of this song: one for singer and piano, one for mixed choir SATB, one for women’s choir SSAA, and one for men’s choir TTBB, a capella and with piano accompaniment. https://drive.google.com/drive/folder...
