Dates are a truly amazing food. They are a good source of calories and packed full of nutrition. Amazingly dates are approximately 50 million years old and have therefore played an important role in human nutrition for thousands of years. Research shows that dates don't only taste good, they are very good for our gut health! Due to a high content of fibre and an antioxidant phytonutrient called polyphenols, dates have been shown to promote the growth of good bacteria in our colon. They have also been shown to be effective in stopping the growth of colon cancer cells. The polyphenol content in dates cut cancer cell growth by more than half, and the whole date extract nearly blocked cancer cell growth completely!! When dates are consumed, we see significant reductions in ammonia concentrations in our stool and well as reduced genotoxicity, meaning significantly less DNA-damaging, which is good, since that’s what’s coating the inside of our colon on a daily basis. The reductions in ammonia are also very important as, on a standard western diet, bacteria in our colon may release the amount of ammonia found in a thousand gallons of Windex!! This is caused by a process called putrefaction. At concentrations found day-to-day inside the colon on usual Western diets, ammonia destroys cells, alters DNA synthesis, increases cellular proliferation, may increase virus infections, favours the growth of cancerous cells, and evidently increases virus infections for a second time. It’s the products of protein and fat digestion that are to blame, such that you can double ammonia concentration in the colon by eating a lot of meat. However, put people on a plant-based diet and within just one week, the enzyme activity that creates the ammonia in the colon drops like a rock. Dates are extremely healthy and great for colon health. Enjoy them in a smoothie, a fruit salad or just on their own!
