Varroa Resistance Breeding • a successful project within the transfer network Saxony⁵

Feeding the world’s population wouldn’t be possible without honeybees. However, the varroa mite is bothering the bees since many years. Currently, almost all colonies are treated with either formic acid or oxalic acid against the mites. But this medication causes stress for the insects. The Saxonian association for breeding of varroa mite resistant bees aims to breed bees which don’t need to be treated with medication. Researchers from University of Applied Sciences Mittweida are developing a genetic test kit in cooperation with the beekeepers that might increase the breeding success of the beekeepers to a great extent in the future. Saxony⁵ is a joint project between five Saxon universities: University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz, Dresden, Leipzig, Zwickau and Mittweida.
