Do Women really hold other Women back?

After five myths that show how systems fail women — in investment, in institutions, in the way risk is measured and ambition is judged — we arrive at the most insidious myth of all. Women hold other women back. This myth is insidious because it takes the evidence of a failing system and turns it into a character flaw. It asks women to carry responsibility for a problem they didn't create. And it distracts attention away from the structural conditions — access to capital, to networks, to markets, to mentors — that actually determine who succeeds. Yes, there are complex dynamics between women in competitive environments. But those dynamics don't emerge in a vacuum. They emerge in systems where scarcity is manufactured, where there appears to be only room for one, where women are watched more closely and held to higher standards. The question isn't why some women don't always support each other. The question is: what kind of environment produces that behaviour — and who designed it? All women? How is that encouraged or enabled by the systems around them?
