If you know me, you know my passion is empowering mamas to have healthy and happy pregnancies, and that’s why I want to talk about what placenta previa is, what to expect if you’re diagnosed, and how you can handle this condition as naturally as possible. While placenta previa affects 1 out of every 200 of pregnant mamas, cases of placenta previa are currently on the rise because more women are having babies later in life, which is one of the risk factors. But do we have to freak just yet, well, no. But first - what is placenta previa? Typically the placenta attaches to the upper part of the uterus, but if you have placenta previa, your placenta is either very low lying and/or covering all or part of the cervix. There are three types of previa: Total or complete previa – Here, the entire cervix is covered by your placenta. Marginal previa – The placenta is covering part of your cervix, but not fully. Low-lying placenta – The placenta is within 2cm of the cervix but not covering it. Many doctors feel comfortable with mamas trying for a vaginal delivery with a low lying placenta They want to see that the placenta is at least 2cm away from the cervix, but talked to your healthcare provider about your specific case. But, here’s the good news and what I really want to stress in this video, as much as 90% of placentas seen as low-lying in the 20-week scan are no longer an issue in the third trimester. Did you hear me? In the vast majority of cases, the placenta moves northward and the placenta previa condition resolves itself by the time it’s ready to give birth. Whew?! So don’t fret, mama! In fact, if you are watching this video because you had your 20 week scan and the doctor mentioned low placenta or placenta previa, I ask that you set aside any worry until you have a final ultrasound in your late third trimester, mmkay? Because the odds that it won’t be an issue are so, so in your favor. If you get to your late third trimester, and your placenta isn’t budging, I hope you can breath deep and forgive yourself as this is so beyond your control. Placenta previa is found more often in older moms, in moms who’ve had c-sections, in moms carrying multiples and moms who may have had other uterine surgeries… so be gentle with yourself if your placenta does stay put. The safest and really only way to give birth will be via cesarean and thank God we have this option in this situation. It literally will save lives. So, if you want a more gentle surgical experience, look into a gentle cesarean and talk to your doctor about ways you can create a soothing and special c-section. Yes, it can be done! But remember, in most cases, placenta previa resolves on its own so trust that you will be in the vast majority. You’ve got this mama either way!
