During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a brave woman named Nosisa Khoza reached out with a message that stopped us in our tracks: "I am not yet a survivor, I am a victim, and I'd like to share my story." In this raw and emotional interview on The Uprising, Nosisa shares her harrowing experience. She speaks about marrying a man 13 years her senior, a relationship that began with what she thought was love but soon descended into a nightmare of control and abuse. She recounts the early red flags she misinterpreted as care—having to report her every move, send pictures of her hairstyle, and account for every moment, even while her husband was away for six months at a time. Her story takes a devastating turn when her desire for independence—to get a job or go back to school—is met with resistance and eventually, violence. The abuse culminates in a final, cruel act: he kicks her out of her home and burns all of her and her young child's clothes. Nosisa is not sharing her story for pity; she is making a desperate plea for help to rebuild her life. She is seeking employment, holding certificates in hospitality and food safety, and needs pro bono legal assistance to recover her deceased child's inheritance funds. This is the story of a woman fighting for a chance at a new beginning, free from fear.
