The Gospel hymn "Thy will, O Lord, not mine" (no. 595 in the 1200-piece edition of Sankey's "Sacred Songs and Solos"; the music edition gives it the title "Thy Will, not Mine"), played by Peter Tylor on the pipe organ at Holy Trinity Church, St Austell, Cornwall, a.k.a. St Austell Parish Church (NPOR K00221), 04/10/2016. Thy will, O Lord, not mine, Teach me to say; Not my will, Lord, but Thine, I would obey; Then shall I know the joy, And Thy name glorify, When I, on earth, shall try To follow Thee. My weakness, Lord, I own, From day to day; I listen for Thy voice To lead the way; Oh, wilt Thou send the light To make my pathway bright, And show me what is right, The only way! I cannot see just where The Spirit leads, But know that Christ is there, Who intercedes; Oh, help me now to rest On Jesus’ loving breast, Till He shall manifest His love in me! (Words by Elizabeth Frazer; music by George Coles Stebbins, 1846-1945) This fine 3M&P instrument with 35 speaking stops - originally built in about 1878 by Bryceson Bros and Ellis of London, enlarged by Hele & Co. of Plymouth and Exeter in 1914, and rebuilt by Maurice Eglinton of Saltash in 1973 - is regrettably not much used in Sunday services at present, as (the predominant style of worship at Holy Trinity being charismatic evangelical) the music is largely provided by an instrumental group, albeit a very good one of its kind. More worryingly still, it has been proposed - as part of a radical scheme of alterations to the building - that this organ be disposed of and replaced with a small electronic substitute, so that the space it now occupies can be used for meeting rooms. Although my main purpose in making videos is to entertain, educate and/or provide spiritual uplift to those who watch them, I hope my recordings of the Holy Trinity organ will also raise awareness of this fine instrument, which deserves to be preserved, used and appreciated as an asset to the church and to the wider community of St Austell. Long may it remain here to glorify God and to uplift the hearts and souls of those who hear it!
