The last two days of firearm season are always intense, and this hunt was no different. I spent two days slowing everything down — tracking deer in the snow, sitting right on the ground, and moving as quietly as possible through frozen late-season woods. To stay silent, I followed a frozen stream deep into the area, using the ice to my advantage. That decision led to two incredible close-range encounters. I had multiple opportunities, took three shots, and came painfully close — close enough to give one deer a haircut. It didn’t end with a filled tag, but it was one of those hunts that shows just how challenging handgun hunting for whitetail deer can be. Every move matters. Every shot counts.
