Join us as we visit the incredible Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Myers Flat, near Bendigo, Victoria — the largest Buddhist stupa in the Western world and one of Australia’s most peaceful spiritual landmarks. Inspired by the famous 15th-century Gyantse Stupa (Kumbum) in Tibet, this magnificent structure stands almost 50 metres high and spans 50 metres at its base. Originally envisioned in 1981 by Lama Thubten Yeshe, construction began in 2003, and the main structure was completed in 2020. Today, the stupa serves as the permanent home of the world-renowned Jade Buddha for Universal Peace, the largest Buddha statue carved from gem-quality jade. Inside the Stupa, visitors can experience a peaceful meditation hall featuring prayer wheels, sacred mantras, relics, and beautiful Buddhist statues. Walking clockwise around the Stupa (known as circumambulation) is believed to create positive karma, inner peace, and spiritual blessings. The Great Stupa is connected with the global Buddhist network Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) and regularly hosts meditation retreats, Vesak celebrations, cultural festivals, and Dharma teachings. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and countryside, the site also offers panoramic views of the Bendigo region, making it an ideal place for relaxation, reflection, and photography. Visitors can enjoy the on-site café and peaceful walking paths. Entry is usually by donation, helping support the maintenance of the Stupa and its community programs. Guests are kindly encouraged to dress modestly and behave respectfully inside this sacred space.
