The use of field of passive sampling for monitoring contaminants in the environment has seen a rapid growth over the last 30 years. Originally used to determine human exposure to harmful chemicals in the workplace, passive samplers were initially integrated into environmental studies as a surrogate for understanding the accumulation of chemicals in organisms. In environmental monitoring, passive samplers are widely used to determine the presence, fate, distribution, and potential impact on environmental health of both organic and inorganic chemicals. In recent years, passive samplers have gained increased acceptance as a tool for regulatory and decisional actions. This presentation will provide an overview of passive sampling technologies, focusing on popular passive technologies for sampling organic and inorganic chemicals in surface waters as well as pore waters. Potential applications and future use in assessment and restoration efforts will be discussed. ***The findings and conclusions in the webinar are those of the presenter(s) and do not necessarily represent the views of DOI’s Restoration Program, the Department -- including the trustee bureaus, or the United States.
