What would your life be like and what would be happening in Brazil and the world? Let's take this trip with you right now and get to know life at that time. We now enter a time capsule and return to Brazil in 1822, 200 years ago. This was a remarkable year for Brazilians. We started the year here as a colony of Portugal. We were a colonial Brazil and all our wealth and rights were determined by the kings of Portugal. It was like this for 300 years. But in 1822, Dom Pedro first declared Brazil's independence, with the great milestone being the cry of independence on the banks of the Ipiranga River, on September 7 of that year. With Brazil's independence declared, the country became an autonomous country, with its own monarchy. On October 12, 1822, Dom Pedro was acclaimed emperor and on December 1, 1822 he was crowned. Our currency was the so-called "réis" (popularly nicknamed patacas). This first coin was made of silver and was divided into 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 réis.
