Ankle injuries are common and can affect the lives of those who suffer the long-term effects of those injuries. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas San Giovanni says that many can get relief from years of pain with proper diagnosis and surgery. [Transcript] [Speaker 1] Humberto Aleman first hurt his ankle when he was 13 [Humberto walking on docks] [Humberto] Injured my foot really bad off a horse. Ever since then, I've been having problems with my left ankle. [Speaker 1] Those problems included, pain, swelling, and instability causing repeated twists and sprains that became more frequent as he got older. At age 47, after several doctors told him he would have to live with the pain, he went to Dr. Thomas San Giovanni at Doctors Hospital Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. [Dr. Thomas San Giovanni] Humberto is a great candidate for the surgery. Once again, he had persistent pain. He had a history that matched what his condition was. His exam was consistent as well, and his imaging studies all showed a torn tendon, torn ligaments and inflammation and impingement in the joint. [Speaker 1] In surgery, Dr. San Giovanni removed scar tissue that had developed around his joint, tightened a loosened ligament to fix his instability and repaired a tendon tear by reattaching it to the bone of his foot. [Dr. Thomas San Giovanni] For, let's say a procedure that I can do within 30, 45 minutes of time, that can make such a big difference in their lives to get them back to something that they felt that they would never get back to. [Doctor explaining ankle pain] [Speaker 1] Humberto's recovery progressed over the next several months from crutches and a cast to a soft boot and included physical therapy twice a week to strengthen his ankle and restore its mobility. [Doctors preparing for surgery] [Humberto] And I can say that very confidently that I'm about 98 to 99% back to where before I got hurt and I will do it all over again. Hopefully not, don't have to go there again, but I will do it all over again if I had to. [Doctors performing surgery] [Speaker 1] Bethany Randell, Baptist Health South Florida News.
