Plant your greywater before you plant your higher water use plants (think fruit trees)! That way, you can safely and effectively use the greywater again to grow sustainable abundance! This inexpensive gravity-fed (no pumps or tanks) system uses common plumbing parts, and no expensive or hard to find valves. For washing machines inside the home, this system is easiest to install when the washing machine is against an exterior wall, one side of the laundry room is an exterior wall, or there is an accessible crawl space under the floor. Be sure you pipe maintains a minimum 2% slope — more on how to do this in "Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond, Volume 2, 2nd Edition" I've helped install this system in cold alpine environments in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA and Calgary, Canada. It works great there too - even in winter. (In those environments the washing machine is inside the house, but all the greywater pipes outlet to rain & greywater gardens outside). Note that this system can also work great for letting your neighbors do their laundry at your place (for a small maintenance fee), so they can learn from using such systems, while helping irrigate your plants.
