Sheba interviews Colonel Demeke Zewdu on April 22nd about the current state of Welkait in Gonder, Ethiopia. With much attention given to this very critical region that is contested by the majority of Ethiopians who historically acknowledge this area as part of Begemeder (now north Gonder), home of the Amhara people. Since 1991, when the TPLF came into power in Ethiopia, this region has been annexed into the Tigray region and has been part of what the TPLF call "Western Tigray". A term widely refuted by Ethiopians and one widely accepted by western media and allies to the TPLF. Since the recent civil war between the TPLF rebel group and the elected government, this area has been taken back by Amhara forces and is currently under the interim administration of Colonel Demeke Zewdu, regional and federal special forces. Since April of 2022, the TPLF have made attacks from the Sudan border into west-most region of the Welkait area called, Humera. Intelligence reports indicate that the TPLF are preparing to make their last attempt of forcefully retake the Welkait region, however Amhara forces led by Colonel Demeke and the federal and regional forces as well as the national guard are prepared to fight to protect their territories against all enemies foreign and domestic. In this first part of the 25 minute full interview with Colonel Demeke, Sheba asks about the current state of affairs, the people of Welkait-Tegede and the complex political climate. Tune in for more interviews from the ground with Colonel Demeke and many others.
