A shocking incident has come to light from the Seemapuri area of Delhi, where a female journalist named Supriya and her cameraman Shyam were attacked by a mob while reporting on illegal encroachments in the Bengali Basti near GTB Hospital. It is being reported that a crowd of around 400 to 500 people, including women and minors, surrounded them and started beating them. Supriya and Shyam were conducting interviews and asking questions when suddenly the crowd turned aggressive. Their camera, microphone, and wallet were snatched. The mob became so violent that both had to run for their lives. According to reports, the area houses a large number of Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators, and tensions there have often been high. What’s most disturbing is that despite the seriousness of the incident, no major media outlet has given it any significant coverage. No political leader or activist has spoken up about it either. It’s only fair to ask — if this had happened to a journalist from another community, would the silence still be the same? Journalism is already a dangerous profession, but when a female reporter gets attacked in the national capital in broad daylight and no one seems to care, it sends a very troubling message. Has reporting the truth become a crime now? Is there no guarantee of safety for journalists anymore? This isn’t just an attack on two individuals — it’s an attack on the freedom of expression, a pillar of any democracy. The question is, will any action be taken against those involved in the attack? Will the government and administration treat this matter seriously, or will it be brushed aside like so many others? It’s time we recognize the double standards and stand with those who dare to speak the truth — regardless of their religion, caste, or ideology. If we stay silent today, there may be no one left to speak up tomorrow.
