Surfin' Summer Nuggets Vol.9 www.coolhand-records.com/surfin-nuggets1-9.html Marcy Joe - What I Did This Summer (7: Robbee R-115) 1961 A female pop singer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a beautiful, breezy island vocal range. She was a student of local songwriter, recording mogul, and vocal coach Lennie Martin. In 1961, she wrote "Ronnie" for her then-boyfriend, Howard, using his name instead. The 17-year-old, whose real name was Marcy Rae Sockel, was scheduled to graduate from high school that spring. Lennie Martin loved the song and co-wrote the single at United Recording Service Studio in Pittsburgh. "Ronnie" was recorded with the help of Lou Sacco (aka Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco, later of pop idol fame Lou Christie) and his group, Lugee and the Lions. Given the stage name Marcy Joe and released on Lennie Martin's Robbee label, the single became a local smash hit, quickly acquiring national distribution rights from Liberty Records. It ultimately became a smash hit, peaking at number 81 on the US charts on May 22, 1961. However, her follow-up single fared poorly, so she moved to Philadelphia-based Swan Records. Due to a miscreditation of Marcy Joe without the "e," she was forced to change her name to Marcy Jo. This single, a follow-up from her time with Robbee, was a fine B-side to "Since Gary Went in the Navy" Side A was written after Gary Troxel, the male lead of The Fleetwoods, was drafted into the Navy. This song was a competition with Roberta Wynn, a female singer on the Jubilee label at the time, but neither song was a hit. This B-side was written by Arthur Altman and Wilbur Meshel, the duo who had written for Frank Sinatra and Del Shannon, among others. It was produced by label owner Lennie Martin and Lou Christie, who was a backup singer for the label at the time. It's a hidden summer pop masterpiece, featuring a refreshing island vocal style that's hard to believe came from a 17-year-old high school girl at the time.
