Today we are looking at a rhum agricole from the Saint James distillery on the caribbean island of Martinique! Rum is an expansive category of spirits and a bit like the era it is often associated with in popular media, the Age of Piracy, there is a lot of freedom in what you can do in the process of making authentic rum...so long as it comes from sugar cane. On one end of the spectrum there is the spiced rum category, which gives you the most freedom to experiment. You can add flavorings, spices, sweeteners, you name it! then on the other end you have the likes of rhum agricole, and in particular, Martinique AOC Rhum Agricole, which can be some of the most regulated rums out there. But as we discuss in the video, that's not a bad thing as you will know exactly what you get in the bottle! Our topic of today, of course, is one of those special Martinique rums!
