Although it is very common for farms to access both surface water from rivers and groundwater from bores, the connection between these two water sources is often overlooked in water management. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR), where surface water is purposely recharged into aquifers to use later in agriculture or to benefit the environment, helps to bridge this gap. MAR schemes currently operate in urban settings in Australia and in agriculture overseas, however, MAR is not common in farming here in Australia. This was the motivation for researchers from the Australian National University’s Institute of Water Futures to develop several MAR scenarios that can be applied to prominent farming regions of Australia including the Murrumbidgee. This video explores some of our work on Aquifer recharge, including these MAR scenarios and a scoping project around Griffith NSW in collaboration with Murrumbidgee Irrigation.
