Our mission is to serve Native birthing families to feel supported, well cared for, and full of the information they need to make confident choices around reproductive health, birthing, and parenthood. We also train Native birthworkers to step into the role of Indigenous birthworker. We envision sovereignty for Native people from our first breaths on Earth through the reclamation of our power during rites of passage rooted in ancestral knowledge and each birthing person being surrounded by their community in connection to their sacred lands and waters. We have been organizing since 2017 to meet a crucial need of Native families from rural Alaska who have to leave their home communities to give birth, often alone, away from their families, cultures, lands, traditional foods, and familiar support system. We formed ANBC to fill a gap in care with nonclinical, culturally matched peer support. Since 2017, we have supported hundreds of women and their families with direct services throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. We come from the community we serve, and we approach our work through a three sisters model where each sister focuses on a specific layer of support to support sovereignty from first breath. First Sister provides free direct and indirect services to Native birthing families in Alaska. Second Sister is growing a cohort of trained Indigenous birthworkers to serve Native birthing families in Alaska. Third Sister supports systemic change for improved maternal health outcomes and positive birthing experiences for Native birthing families in Alaska.
