During the evening of Oct. 10, 1862, three citizens of Chambersburg, Pa., surrendered the town to Confederate Gen. Wade Hampton. He was part of a 1,800-strong cavalry force commanded by Gen. JEB Stuart. One of the citizens who surrendered the town, Alexander Kelly McClure, was a prominent newspaper editor, politician, and Union army major tasked with recruitment. Hampton told McClure he should go to his home, and, if any Confederate attempted to arrest him for being a U.S. officer, that Hampton would come to his aid. McClure describes what happened next.
