Reece and Marianne Stein are heading to Taos, New Mexico in this week’s “Where To.” They check out exquisite adobe architecture that abounds throughout town, a tribute museum for Kit Carson and gravesite memorial for Dennis Hopper, art galleries full of local and regional Native American artists, a neighborhood of “earth ships” made from recyclables and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, a towering steel bridge overlooking the Rio Grande River. This quirky and eclectic city where “Easy Rider” was filmed also features exceptional food featuring locally-grown spices and produce and sizzling specialties that bring the heat. Unfortunately, Taos Pueblo, multi-storied adobe dwellings inhabited for over 1000 years, was closed due to COVID during our visit. That landmark is the only living Native American community designated as both a World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark so be sure to check it out on your visit.
