Presented by the Black Law Students Association, From Pioneers to Progress: Lessons from Black Legal Trailblazers is part of Vanderbilt Law School’s Black History Month celebration marking the 70th anniversary of the admission of the first Black students to the law school. This event, part of the Dean’s Lecture Series and supported by the Office of Culture and Community and the George Barrett Social Justice Program, brings together distinguished Black alumni to reflect on their lived experiences navigating education, the legal profession, and leadership in the decades following formal desegregation. Drawing on their journeys from childhood and education to Vanderbilt Law School and beyond, the panel explores access, opportunity, persistence, and responsibility. Through personal reflection and intergenerational insight, the conversation examines how progress unfolded after the doors first opened, where resistance endured, and what challenges remain. The panel honors the pioneers who paved the way while inviting students to consider what it means to carry that legacy forward in the legal profession today. -- Follow us on socials: Keep up with all things #VandyLaw on social media, including student-driven content, faculty media insights, campus events, and more.
