Gregory and Melanie Magazu (like magaz-ine) have three kids, including a newborn, but they really want to adopt more. They feel that if they’re able to provide a home for foster children, it’s something they have to do. How awesome is that? You have to admire any couple willing to open up their home to strangers for life! And yet the state of Massachusetts has said they can't have any foster kids. The Magazus are saying the state's discriminating against them because of their Christian faith. So what's going on? The issue revolves around the couple's belief that they should be allowed to hit their kids. They believe in Proverbs 13:24, the passage that basically says spare the rod, spoil the child. They think spanking is best way to correct children when they do something wrong. When a state-appointed social worker heard that, she said they can't adopt foster kids. A lot of those kids come from abusive homes. The last thing they need is to be around even more of it. The Magazus, like a lot of parents, say: We're not abusing our children! We're just spanking them. As if there's a difference. They say they do it out of love. Because love makes it hurt less. If you've been spanked, or you know someone who has been, I'm guessing the reaction wasn't "Thank you sir. May I have another." It was more like "I hate these people." Why would anyone ever teach a child that love and pain go together? If they're not old enough to reason with you, then they're not old enough to spank. And if they are old enough to reason with you, then go talk it out! There's only one instance where I could understand how spanking might be okay... and it has nothing to do with raising a child. The Magazus even "compromised," saying: we'll only hit our biological children, not the foster kids, but the state still said no. Being around abuse is still a problem. This case made it all the way to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. We'll find out soon enough whether or not the family will be allowed to adopt foster kids. It'd be disturbing if the Courts said yes. The state doesn't have the power to stop parents from spanking their own kids within some limits, but they can make sure foster kids are in homes where abuse, whether it’s faith-based or not, isn’t tolerated. I don’t care if the Magazus think their hearts are in the right place. Their hands aren’t. That's all that matters.
