IITs were recently in news for violating reservation norms stipulated as per law in many of the P.G and PhD courses. A few days back in a report released on IIT Bombay, it was found that the number of PhD scholars belonging to SC & ST is very poor in most departments, almost nil in many places, during the last five years. Amidst these gross violations of reservation norms by the Top Public STEM Institutions under the guise of ensuring 'quality' & 'merit', this Panel Discussion addressed the structural issues at hand and elaborated on the need for ensuring adequate representation of the backwards & marginalised groups as guaranteed legally. Science & Technology are usually understood as scientific and neutral fields, but this utter lack of equitable representation points to the biases in Modern Science practice. This event, we believe, abled to discuss the operation of caste structures in this practice of science and technology. Speakers: Dr Abha Sur, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is a Scientist turned Historian of Science and the author of the book "Dispersed Radiance: Caste, Gender and Modern Science in India" Dr P.K Biju, Former two-time Lok Sabha M.P (Kerala) & Former National President of SFI - Students' Federation of India He holds a doctorate in Polymer Chemistry from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala.
