This video is a performance of Leah's musical adaptation of Refaat Alareer's "If I Must Die". The introduction to the song speaks to work Leah does in bridging divides within Jewish communities. This performance is from Tikkun V'Or congregation in Ithaca NY, where she curated a concert specifically to meet the moment of the political divides surrounding Israel/Palestine within the congregation. “With a Long Tail” is a poem written by Refaat Alareer just weeks before he was killed by an Israeli air strike in Gaza on December 6, 2023. In addition to being a poet, Alareer was also a professor, activist and mentor to many young writers. The poem speaks to the ritual of youth flying kites in Gaza as a practice of freedom, often kites they made themselves. This poem has become a symbol of Alareer’s life and work, and also a poem of solidarity with the struggle for safety, equal rights and freedom for Palestinians.
