The last freighter of the 2025-26 navigation season to transit the Welland Canal, the Algoma Buffalo sails upbound by Ridge Road. The Buffalo was heading from Hamilton, ON where she unloaded her cargo of iron ore, to Port Colborne (which is about 5 nautical miles upbound from where this video was recorded) for winter lay-up. Built for the American Steamship Company in 1978 by the Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, WI she was launched as the Buffalo. After going through 2 other owners, the 634'10" long river-class self-unloader, was purchased by the Algoma Central Corporation in 2018 and renamed the Algoma Buffalo. She is powered by two 3,500 hp General Motors Electro Motive Division diesel engines. Recorded on January 13th, 2026.
