As Unitarian Universalists prepare to mark the 65th anniversary of their historic merger this June, Senior Minister Rev. John Morehouse asks a bold question: what does the future of religion look like—and why is progressive faith growing again? In this wide-ranging sermon, Rev. John traces the roots of both the Universalists and the Unitarians, from tent revivals and abolition movements to today's resurgent progressive congregations. Drawing on Audre Lorde's vision of joy as resistance, he makes the case that what UU communities offer—hope, meaning, ritual, and action—is exactly what a fear-saturated culture is hungry for. He also speaks honestly about what "the future of the church" demands: small groups, diverse voices, multicultural and interfaith community, and—when workers who built our own stone wall are yanked from their cars by ICE—showing up for one another in the most concrete ways possible. This is a sermon about history, identity, urgency, and a call to be the superheroes the world needs right now. Recorded March 16, 2026 at Main Line Unitarian Church (MLUC) in Devon, Pennsylvania. mluc.org #UnitarianUniversalist #ProgressiveFaith #MLUC #JoyAsResistance #ChurchForOurTime
