His journey has seen him use his IT experience to bring fresh ideas to the airport industry. So let's dive into the innovation lab Rick is building and how that fits into the mission of providing a better experience for his customers at San Diego International Airport. Rick looks at various KPIs and metrics to make sense of the data and improve the customer experience. His team uses a variety of data analytics platforms to do this. Rick's goal is to make San Diego International Airport a "magical experience" for its customers. To do this, he starts by understanding the problem and then moving to possible solutions. He has launched 3 Innovator Batches to date, testing and implementing various technologies such as airport indoor navigation, stronger use of mobile apps/techs, and assisted parking. Rick's favorite example of an airport that delivers a great experience is Nashville, as it gives customers a great look and feels from a people, architecture, and technology view. His goal as the Director of Innovation and Customer Experience is to bring this same experience to San Diego. Finally, Rick's favorite airline to fly from San Diego is Delta, due to the CEO Ed Bastian's focus on customer experience. He also enjoys seeing autonomous robots in airports and would like to see more airport innovations in the next five years.
