Current Status and Development Plans Amtrak’s New Train in Long Island is Coming As of 2025, Amtrak’s planned expansion to Ronkonkoma is in its early planning and feasibility stages, with efforts backed by a $500,000 grant from the Federal Railroad Administration. The new route will include stops at Hicksville and Jamaica, providing direct connections to the Northeast Corridor, and Amtrak plans to offer three daily round-trip services, designed to serve both commuters and long-distance travelers, contributing significantly enhanced travel options and creating a more frequent smooth link between local commuter rail and intercity services. Amtrak’s New Train in Long Island is Coming Currently, feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and preliminary engineering work are underway to explore how the new Amtrak Airo trains can be integrated into the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) network. These studies are focused on the necessary upgrades to tracks, stations, and signals to accommodate the new service. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with phased improvements planned for Ronkonkoma Station, including platform extensions and signal upgrades to accommodate intercity service. Coordination with the MTA and local agencies will be crucial to minimize disruptions to existing LIRR operations.
