After riding loads over the Easter break in places as far flung as County Durham and North Yorkshire (crazy right?) I have slowly retreated back to more local trails, Ladybower, Blacka Moor and now even more local around sunny Chez vegas. I asctually started getting a bit nostalic on the descent at 1:40 as I always used to do this run back in the 90s. That is why I mentioned my "Marins". Having had three (a 93 Palisades Trail, a 94 Eldridge Grade and a 2000 Eldridge Grade) they were the bikes that sparked and nurtured my love for mountain biking. Compared to any modern HT with decent suspension (well my first two had none to be fair), modern geometry and brakes that actually work, they're junk....but at the time they were ace! From there it was down Johhnygate Lane and onto Milthorpe. I get a bit annoyed at this point, which on reflection isn't fair. It is clear from Johhnygate lane at 3:00 and many other trails (Moss Road, Quarry descent to Stoney Middleton, Car Road to name but three) that the heavy rains over the last couple of years has really damaged the trails. They do need repair and made safe for all users. From a very selfish point of view mountain bikers do want rough and rocky. However, it is not fair to expect horses and walkers to cope with them. Shame though :( Next up another local classic, Cartledge Lane. So cool to flow through the bat tunnel, building speed until you pop out at the end. After Barlow I went and found some jumps in the woods, coz you know, I am such a regular at these venues. Now these are very well known locally and there have been tracks in there for years. Next up a crackingly fast piece of singletrack that takes you over to Cutthorpe before Holme Brook Valley Park, home to an actual MTB trail (well they took the signs down years ago). So to answer the question....are my local trails, great trails? They aren't too bad. I mean its not exactly Whistler but it isn't Norfolk either ;) https://www.komoot.com/tour/215841882...
