6. Maoist Politics and the Communist Legacy

This lesson examines the economic goals of the Chinese Communist Party in the 1950s and how Mao's growing irrelevancy in expert economic debates led him to draw on various political tactics (such as a cult of personality) to overcome opposition within the party and embark on multiple disastrous political campaigns. These included the Hundred Flowers Movement, the Anti-Rightist Campaign, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. We conclude with reflections on the legacy of the Mao era for China today, with a bird's-eye perspective of the turbulent trajectory of China from the Macartney Mission in 1793 to our own day.
