In his course on Basilides, Dr Litwa teaches how to distinguish the authentic Basilides (in his fragments) from the Basilides depicted by the heresy hunters (mainly Irenaeus and the Refutator). Dr Litwa discusses all 19 of the authentic fragments of Basilides and Isidore, and uses these fragments to understand and critique other reports on Basilides and his heirs. This video introduces Basilides of Alexandria. It talks about what we can know about Basilides' life, the main sources for his teaching, and his son Isidore. In particular, I study fragment 6 from Isidore, which interprets Matthew 19:11-12 and 1 Corinthians 7:9. It is arguably the first Christian discussion of masturbation.
