This footage captures U.S. Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet conducting surf training in dangerous conditions as Hurricane Erin swell slammed the Jersey Shore. Crews operated their 47-foot Motor Lifeboats (MLBs) in breaking waves of 9–16 feet, navigating inbound and outbound runs through one of the most hazardous inlets on the East Coast. These highly trained Surfmen, graduates of the National Motor Lifeboat School, are among the few Coast Guard operators certified to handle lifeboats in breaking surf conditions — a skill critical for rescue missions in extreme weather. Hurricane Erin, at its peak a Category 5 storm, has become one of the largest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic, spanning more than 500 miles wide. Though staying offshore, Erin continues to generate life-threatening surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding across the Northeast. Officials have warned of waves up to 17 feet, 50 mph wind gusts, and 2–3 feet of coastal flooding along vulnerable areas of New Jersey, Long Island, and New York City. A state of emergency was declared in New Jersey, and public beaches across the region were closed due to the dangerous conditions. This rare look shows the Coast Guard operating in conditions where most vessels could never safely pass. The footage highlights the skill and preparation needed for maritime rescues during hurricane-fueled surf — and underscores the risks to anyone who enters the ocean during storms of this magnitude.
