Five Billion Mectizan Treatments…and Counting

This year we’re celebrating an amazing 5 billion Mectizan treatments donated to end river blindness and lymphatic filariasis. In 1987, Merck & Co., Inc.* donated the medicine Mectizan—”as much as needed, for as long as needed”—for the elimination of onchocerciasis (also known as river blindness). The donation was later expanded to cover elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in certain settings. In 2025 the milestone donation of the five billionth Mectizan treatment provided a compelling opportunity to reflect on the donation's dramatic impact, acknowledge the hard work of partners, and honor the commitment of the people who have driven such significant progress over the past 38 years.
