While wandering through the Jizera Mountains, you cannot miss the Jizerka Valley with the JIZERKA settlement, one of the oldest in the Jizera Mountains. 0:00 Start 0:14 Orle Tourist Station (825 m) it is situated at an important crossroads of hiking and cycling routes that lead here from both the Polish and the Czech side of the Jizera Mountains. Orle lies on the Polish side of the Izera Mountains and is a remnant of an old glass-making settlement that operated here in the years 1754-1888. The object of today's Orle hostel, the so-called The forester's lodge was built around 1860 by the owner of a glassworks. 1:29 Route course with map 2:04 Karlovský bridge The reinforced concrete bridge over the border (🇵🇱/🇨🇿) Jizera River had been standing since 1901, it connected Jizerka and Orle until the crossing was closed after World War II, it was demolished in 1979. The new wooden bridge was built in 2005, it was demolished in August 2020, as it was in danger of collapsing. The construction of the new one will start in spring 2021. A temporary footbridge has been built right next to it. 2:34 "Trzy Izeryny" educational trail Cross-border, the oldest educational trail in the Jizera Mountains (since 1971), describes the curiosities of the surrounding nature. Information boards describe the geological structure of Bukovec, the ecosystem of the Izerki peat bog and Hala Izerska on the Polish side. 2:56 Bukowec (1005 m) Bukovec is a basaltic, cone dominant over the mountain settlement of Jizerka. There is a nature reserve here, established because of the unique exposure of basalt, the largest in the entire Jizera Mountains. Thanks to the basalt substrate, rich vegetation has developed on the hill. The summit offers a view of the Jizera Mountains and the western part of the Karkonosze Mountains. Traces of old quarries are visible under the Bukovec peak. 3:40 Jizerka settlement The picturesque settlement of JIZERKA in the Czech part of the Jizera Mountains is the highest situated settlement in the Jizera Mountains (861 m). It is mentioned for the first time in 1539 as a remote place of residence for Czech tarantulas and bird catchers. Moreover, it was known from finds of semi-precious stones in the Sapphire Stream. One of the stones, ilmelite, was named "izerine" after it was found. In 1828, J. V. Riedel, a glassmaker, established the first glassworks here. In 1866, a second ironworks was built, which operated until 1911. The settlement of Jizerka is an important crossroads of hiking trails. 4:18 Muzeum Jizerských hor Today there is no school in the settlement of Jizerka. However, the building from 1889 still serves educational and cultural functions. It houses the Jizera Mountains Museum, which is open from May to October. 4:25 Penzion "Pyramida" Today, the "Pyramida" guesthouse is located in the former glass grinding shop. 4:31 Penzion "Panský dům" In the former house of the foundry owner there is a hotel and restaurant "Panský dům". 4:42 The former "Nowa Huta" The original building of the Riedel glassworks from 1866 was exceptionally adapted. It is the highest located sports hall in the Czech state. 5:56 "Rašeliniště Jizerky" Nature Reserve Jizerki Peatbog Reserve was established in 1960, located between the settlement of Jizerka and Smědava. The area is protected by plants and animals living in mountain peat bogs. The reserve stretches in a wide, flat cauldron with an average height of 880 m. The Jizerka stream flows through the reserve. 6:48 Kiosk "Promenáda" A mountain buffet with tradition (930 m), one of the few places where prices are set by the customer. 7:21 am Mountain cottage "Smědava" Smědava is the name of the area around the mountain chalet "Horská Chata Smědava" (847 m). The depression under Smědavská hora is the highest point of the only road that runs through the Jizera Mountains and connects the villages of Bílý Potok and Desná. The area was probably inhabited at the beginning of the 19th century by lumberjacks, charcoal makers and cattle shepherds. There was a customs watchtower here, and in 1841 the first tourist shelter was built, which burned down in 1932. The modern chalet was established in 1935. Smědava is a popular starting point for hikers, cyclists and skiers. 9:10 Pytlácké kameny (975 m) it is a hill and rocks on which there is a viewing platform available for tourists. The name of the hill and rocks comes from the poacher (Czech Pytlák) Hennrich, who had his hideout here, and was shot in 1813. 10:33 Jelení stráň (1018 m) it is the highest elevation of the Middle Ridge.
