Everyone has their reasons. Jean Renoir’s timeless adage echoes as a poignant refrain throughout the films of writer-director Asghar Farhadi. Recognised for their tense social-realism, his films offer an incisive look into the paradoxes of human nature—imbued with a tender sense of empathy and compassion. Together with the screenings of his latest film A Hero, under the Releases banner, AFA is proud to present a curated selection of Farhadi’s films from the past two decades. Born in 1972 in the central Iranian province of Isfahan, Asghar Farhadi studied theatre in the University of Tehran, where he also made several 8mm and 16mm short films with the Iranian Young Cinema Society. By the end of the 90s, he was writing and directing for radio and television, eventually moving to feature filmmaking in the 2000s. From the early and less widely-known Beautiful City (2004), Fireworks Wednesday (2006) and About Elly (2009), to his Oscar-winning breakthroughs A Separation (2011) and The Salesman (2016), his impeccably constructed narratives, while deeply embedded within the milieu of class, gender and social mores in contemporary Iran, transcend their specificities. Having garnered wide global acclaim, he is one of Asia’s most important cinematic voices.
